We did it! For those of us with students, the end of the school year is upon us. However, our students need to make it through final exams and projects before the joys of summer can begin. This is a stressful time for both students and teachers. Thankfully, when we come to the Lord stressed,…
Read MoreMost of us are familiar with the term JOY – Jesus, Others, You. In our Christian circles, we refer to this as putting Jesus first, then others, then ourselves. It’s a simple word that is relatively hard to follow through doing. Most of us, myself included, tend to put ourselves and others before Jesus. This…

Luke 10:38b-39 A Martha During the Holidays I have a confession to make. I didn’t take my own advice in this blog post. Determined to rest my soul…

Read MoreIn the Christmas story, we are introduced to Joseph. We learn of Christ’s earthly father in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. While not much is known of him, we know that his unconditional love for a woman, and his obedience to the Lord, play an important role in God’s plan for redeeming His people…
Read MoreWhether we are ready for it or not, the Christmas season is officially here. While this Christmas may look vastly different than those in years past, one thing remains steadfast: we are celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Among the decorated Christmas trees, Santas, and snowmen, we see nativity sets to remind us…
Read MoreSoul Care How are you caring for your soul these days? Please take a moment to stop and think about this question. For the past eight months (why does it feel longer than eight months?!?!), we have been living with uncertainty, extreme stress, and anxiety. Physically, we are exhausted, and our bodies crave sleep. Mentally,…

With the high of 70 degrees and a warm breeze coming through the open windows, I took my time fluffing the tree out, setting up the nativity scene, and humming to the Christmas music flowing from my Bluetooth speakers. Today is the first Sunday of Advent. It’s a time of anticipation and waiting. It is a period of reflection and spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ. Over these next four Sundays, let’s focus on the hope, peace, joy, and love our Savior brings!
FOR TO US A CHILD IS BORN
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon[a] his shoulder, and his name shall be called[b]
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
Long after Moses authored Genesis, the Jewish people had
forgotten the Lord. He was the One who brought them out of slavery from
Egypt and into the Promised Land that was flowing with “milk and honey,”
(Exodus 3:8). The Lord’s chosen people were in a crisis. They were living
for themselves and enjoying every sinful thing imaginable. The Lord was
about to shake up His people, using the Prophet Isaiah.
Among the spiritual gloom that had taken over the Israelites, combined
with the prophetic message that the empire of Assyria would overtake the
Israelites (Isaiah 8), lies the joy and hope of who is to come. Darkness was
upon them, but a Light would soon appear. A Light that would bring redemption not only to Jews but to each one of us through Christ’s shed blood on the cross.
Tucked into Isaiah 9:6 is our hope. A hope that through Jesus Christ, we
will have eternal life with the Father. A hope that because of that eternal
life, there will be no more pain, suffering, tears, or sin. A hope that would
get us through the worst of times here on earth.
