The Soothing Sound of Traffic

This past weekend, I was at a much needed 24-hour Silence and Solitude Retreat. Over the next few weeks, I will be writing about some of the things that I discovered about myself and God, but today I want to focus on the weather, traffic and leaning on the Lord – believe it or not, they all do go together!

The Weather

The Lord blessed us with fantastic weather! Friday night was chilly, and Saturday was no humidity, low 70’s and a gentle breeze! Before I went to bed, I turned the air off in my room and opened the window up. It was the best night of sleeping I have had in a while! On Saturday, I walked the grounds and took in all of God’s beauty that surrounded the retreat center.

The Traffic

While the retreat center is out in the country, off in the distance, I could hear the gentle, soothing hum of the I-55 traffic.

And my heart was happy!

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved hearing the sound of traffic from the interstate, and I have no clue as to why.

Because here’s the thing, I detest driving in traffic.

I am an impatient driver. At least once a week, one of my sons will tell me, “Mom, chill!”

So, how in the world can I find the sound of traffic soothing, but loathe driving in it? Only God knows!

Psalm 46:10

On Saturday morning, I woke up early and headed outside with my Bible, journal, and a cup of coffee. In the coolness of the morning, I was able to sit in silence, listening to the hum of the traffic, and Psalm 46:10 in the ESV came to mind.

“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

Curious, I dug deeper into the various translations of this ever-popular verse, and The Message translation caught my eye.

Step out of the traffic!

In this day and age, we are running ourselves beyond the point exhaustion.

We need to step out of the traffic and rat-race of life and rest in Him.

We need to enjoy life as the Lord intended us to, entirely relying on His strength to get us through our days. We were not created to go through the daily grind on our own.

Scripture states over and over that we are to lean on Him.

One of the most well-known Bible verses is Proverbs 3:5-6.

My Encouragement to You

I encourage you, friend, to set aside time to just rest. Whether it’s in the school pick up line, early mornings, or after everyone goes to bed, take a moment for some quiet time.

How are you going to find your rest? Please comment below or send me an email. I would love to pray for you!
