*Today starts a new series on the Armor of God. Every Tuesday, we will be focusing on an individual piece of the armor and what it represents. It’s important to note that to be effective against the schemes of the enemy; we need to put on the whole Armor of God – not just a piece here or there.

This past December, I listed my favorite Bible studies that have helped me grow as a believer. You can view that post here.

Hands down, my favorite Bible study is “The Armor of God,” by Priscilla Shirer.

My workbook looks like it has gone through a battle itself; it’s tattered, torn, marked up, and stained with tears. It’s highlighted, underlined and has more post-it notes in it than a brand new post-it notes pad.

In that workbook, Priscilla asks the readers to list the things that we were struggling with. This study was done during a season in my life where I was struggling with the physical pain of an unknown source, an upheaval among board members of a professional organization that I was a member of, the questioning of what I wanted to do with my life career-wise and my yearning to become a mentor.

The summer of 2016 was full of unknowns and despair.

The Whole Armor of God

There are so many verses in the Bible that, depending on the situation we are in, will speak to our hearts and souls.

In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul writes about the armor of God. It is designed to defend us with the spiritual warfare that is all around us.

Did you know that in the heavenly realms there is a battle over you?

And it’s not just some backyard nerf war battle. This is intense warfare; far greater than any physical war on earth, greater than you can ever fathom.

Thankfully, the Lord shields us from ever seeing these battles in real time. In our frailty as humans, we could crumble at the sight of it!

Ephesians 6:10-18 says,

“10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.”

The whole Armor of God contains the following battle pieces:

  1. The Belt of Truth.
  2. The Breastplate of Righteousness.
  3. The Shoes for the Gospel of Peace.
  4. The Shield of Faith.
  5. The Helmet of Salvation.
  6. The Sword of the Spirit.

Individually, these weapons protect us in their own right, but collectively, these weapons when joined together, let the enemy know who we are…

We are children of God.

Armor Up!

As we begin studying these verses, let’s commit to armor up every morning. In our minds we should purposely put on our belts, breastplates, and shoes; grab our shields, put on our helmets and stand firm with our swords. It’s time to “armor up!”

The Lord Hears Our Prayers!

As I read that list of struggles from 2016, I was in awe over how the Lord has worked in my life! That physical pain? A deeply pulled muscle. I am no longer a member of that organization as mentioned above. And career-wise? My part-time job and this blog are living proof of that. And I will be mentoring a group of teenage girls this summer, as we study, can you guess? The Armor of God Teen Edition, by Priscilla Shirer!

Thanks be to God! All glory and honor to Him!
