O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Throughout my childhood, one of my least favorite Christmas hymns was “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” It doesn’t have a catchy tune, and it certainly isn’t about getting presents or even Santa. It has a haunting melody and lyrics, and if you listen to it carefully, a desperate plea for saving. You can hear the desperation of the Jews, hoping and pleading for their Savior to come and save them.
As an adult, this is one of my favorite Christmas hymns, because I need a Savior! You need a Savior! We all need a Savior!
I encourage you to read the lyrics slowly and savor every word of this song!
The earliest manuscript found of this hymn can be dated back to 1710, over 300 years ago. They needed their Savior then as we do now!
That is the same Savior, who humbly stepped off His heavenly throne, took human form, and lived and died as a man, but rose from the dead as Lord of All! Our Savior did all this so we can have eternal life in heaven with Him! This is the greatest gift of all!

My favorite old Christmas carol is “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” … and yes, the comma is in the correct place there! Several years ago I discovered an article that explained the meaning of this carol by “translating” the Old English that it was written in into the English we understand today. The word “rest” actually used to mean “make” or “keep,” and “merry” meant “mighty” (as in, Robin Hood’s Merry Men, who were not always jovial, but were mighty!). This discovery came at an especially good time for me, as we had just gone through an incredibly difficult year as a family. I wasn’t really looking forward to Christmas at all that year until I saw this carol as it was intended … “God make you mighty, gentlemen! Let nothing you dismay. Remember, Christ our Savior was born on Christmas day to save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray. Oh, tidings of comfort and joy!” Wow! Tidings of comfort and joy, indeed!
