Old Testament Prophecies, New Testament Fulfillments and The Savior of the World

Old Testament Prophecies, New Testament Fulfillments, and The Savior of the World

I have always found Biblical prophecy intriguing and a little confusing.

OK, maybe a lot confusing at times.

However, by slowing down, studying the Word, and researching the meaning of the verse, I have found that I can begin to try and fully process the prophetic verses.

With the Christmas season upon us, my heart has been focusing on the coming of the Messiah. The Hebrew word for Messiah is Mashiach, which means “anointed” or “to anoint.” The rendered Greek word is “Christos,” which means Christ. Jesus Christ is the anointed one – The One who takes away the sins of the world.

The Promise of the Messiah – Pentateuch

In the past, at the beginning of the new year, I would set the goal to read the whole Bible in a year. And by mid-January every year, I would give up because of lack of time or comprehension. Because of this “goal,”  I’ve read the first few chapters of Genesis numerous times and glossed over this critical verse regarding the coming of the Savior:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15 ESV

The “he” and “his” in this verse is Jesus, Himself.

There, within the third chapter of Genesis, our Lord states that yes, the enemy will wreak havoc on the world, but Jesus will have the final say. Satan would nip at the heels of Christ, only to be crushed by them at the appointed time. That time was the resurrection of the Savior, permanently declaring victory over sin and death.

The Book of Genesis isn’t the only book to mention the coming of a Savior. Deuteronomy 18:15-19 states that this Savior would be the promised Prophet.

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’And the Lord said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.”

The Promise of the Messiah – The Books of the Prophets and Psalms

The prophets Samuel, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Daniel, Zechariah, Malachi, Hosea, and Micah, along with a few Psalmists, also prophesied the coming of Jesus.

In the next few weeks, I will be reflecting more on some of these verses from the Old Testament, but for now, here are a few of what I call, “Praise the Lord, I finally get it!” verses.

Jeremiah 31:31-32 – The Messiah would bring a new covenant.

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.”

And Isaiah 61:1-2 – The Messiah would redeem His people.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound
to proclaim the year of the Lord‘s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;”

New Testament Fulfillments

Each and every one of the scriptures that I gave as an example has already been or will be fulfilled.

The events of Revelation 20:11-15 will fulfill Genesis 3:15.

“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

Matthew 13:57 is one of nine verses that fulfill Deuteronomy 18:15-19.

“And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.'”

Mark 14:24 is one of nine verses that fulfill Jeremiah 31:31-32.

“And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.'”

And finally, Luke 4:17-21 fulfills Isaiah 61:1-2.

“And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.'”

The Savior Came for You and Me

As I researched the many, many Messianic prophesies, I couldn’t help but think of how the Jewish people missed the Savior being born. They were looking for a mighty king who would come in and save them from Roman oppression. What they received was a baby, born of a virgin mother in the little town of Bethlehem. That baby was mightier than any king that has ever or will ever grace this earth.

Thank you, Lord God of All, for Your Son, Your Word, and for loving us so much that You sent Jesus Christ to save us from our sins and give us eternal life with You!

Have a blessed Tuesday, my friends! Rest in Him. Rest in the Word and know that you are loved by the Savior!
