I AM… The Door of the Sheep, the Good Shepherd

“The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11b

As we continue the “I AM” series, we will be focusing on the sheep and the shepherd. Our Savior used these two words so we could understand what we are to Him and what He is to us.

The Bible frequently uses the terms “sheep” and “shepherd.” The Patriarchs were considered shepherds as they led the people into the Promised Land.

In Biblical times, shepherding was a popular occupation. The shepherd and their flock of sheep were close, so close in fact that when the shepherd called for his flock, they would recognize his voice and come running. The shepherd cares for, feeds, and even dies for his sheep.

Just like Christ does for us. He cares for, feeds us, and died on the cross of us.

I AM…

the Door of the Sheep.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep,” John 10:7
By stating that He is, “the door of the sheep,” Jesus is simply saying He is the only way to the Father. Through Christ, we will have eternal life with the Father. We can’t do this on our own though. We need the Savior to be the door to the Father.

I AM…

the good shepherd.

A good shepherd lays down his life for his flock.

Jesus laid down his life for His people.

There is a strong bond between the shepherd and his sheep. The hired hand is only in it for the money, and when danger arises, he flees (John 10:12-13.) The shepherd does not flee. He protects and defends his flock at all costs.

Just like our Savior does for us.

Bible Reading

I will be honest with you; at times, it is hard for me to understand exactly what Jesus is saying when He speaks in metaphors. However, with prayer and slow, methodical reading, I have come to love these metaphors, and I have gained a greater insight into the Word. If you struggle as I do, take heart, sweet friends, the Lord is with us and will guide us through the Word.

May I Pray for You?
