I AM the Bread of Life, the Light of the World

*For the next two months we will be focusing on the seven “I AM” statements that Jesus spoke in the Gospel of John. If you haven’t read that book of the Bible from the beginning to the end, I encourage you to read it and see how much Jesus loves you!

I AM the Bread of Life

After reading the Gospel of John, I was intrigued by the seven, “I AM” statements. At the time of the first statement, Jesus was starting His ministry. He had turned water into wine, spoke to the woman at the well, (click here to read my blog post about that encounter), healed the sick on the Sabbath, and fed five thousand men with only five loaves of bread and two fish.

People were talking and whispering behind His back and were utterly confused about who He is.

After feeding the five thousand, Jesus retreated across the sea. While the Bible doesn’t explicitly state it’s for rest, I can imagine that’s precisely why He went there. I’m tired after feeding two hungry teenagers, can you imagine how exhausted Jesus was after providing food for that many people?

His quiet time didn’t last long though. The next morning the people crossed the sea, eager to see Jesus, to question Him, and to seek Him for their own physical or material interests. They wanted something to grasp physically, instead of understanding the truth that was in front of them – He was the Messiah, our Messiah.

“Who are you?” they questioned.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

While it’s not quite as prevalent now as it was back in Jesus’s day, bread was a staple of life for the people of Israel.

Jesus was stating that He provides the substance needed to live. That was the truth in Biblical times, and it’s the truth for us now.

I AM the Light of the World

Jesus’ second “I AM” was spoken in the temple to the Pharisees and scribes. He was already causing a stir among the leaders, so when Jesus spoke, they listened. Unfortunately, their hearts and minds were in the dark. Those who walk in darkness tend to get real comfortable in the darkness.

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Jesus came into the world to save us from our sins and expose what’s in the darkness.

He is the Light that will free us from the darkness.

He is the Light that will save us from the darkness.

He is the Light of Life.

He is our Savior.

Follow Him, friends!
