Day 7 of Holy Week – Silent Saturday

As we finish out Holy Week on this Silent Saturday, it’s a great time to reflect on what happened yesterday, and what is to come tomorrow.

The Guards at the Tomb

The Gospel of Matthew is the only given account of what happened on Saturday. While Jesus’s family and friends were still recovering from the shock of Friday’s events, the chief priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate. Still not convinced that Jesus and his followers were finished, they begged Pilate to seal the tomb and place guards outside of it.

It appears that these men were actually listening to what Jesus was teaching. They didn’t believe one word that He said, but they remembered this:  “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.'” Matthew 27:63

Oh yes, He will rise, but not in the way you think!

The Savior, the Messiah, your Messiah preached of God’s love, salvation, and eternal life and the thing that you are worried about most is that His disciples will come and steal the Savior’s body to prove a point? Were their hearts so hardened and their eyes so blind from the previous day’s events that they still didn’t get the whole picture?

Really?

*Insert eye roll!*

Pilate granted their request.

The story of what happens with the guards picks back up in Matthew 28:11-15. The guards recounted their experiences of the earthquake, the angels rolling aside the stone and the empty tomb. Despite this, the leaders still did not believe in the Words of Jesus, so they bribed the guards to say that Jesus’ disciples came in the middle of the night and stole His body.

*Insert second eye roll!*

Some people, no matter how much the truth is presented to them, will not believe in the Word.

It happened in Jesus’ day, and it still happens now.

So what can we do? We pray for them. We continue to read and study the Word and speak kindly with them. Let them see how Jesus is transforming us. We love them.

“Heavenly Father, on the Silent Sunday, we pray for those who are going to church tomorrow. Whether they are going willingly or being dragged along with family, may Your Words speak to them. May they see how much the Savior loves them. May they be welcomed with open arms and warm smiles. In Jesus’s Name, Amen!”
