The New Commandment – Love One Another

As we come to a close of this blog series, I wanted to end with the words of Jesus. As we transition into the Easter season, my focus today is on the love of Jesus. His love for you, His love for me, and His love for everyone.

On the night of His betrayal and arrest, Jesus was in the Upper Room having one last supper with the disciples. I will go into greater detail as to what happened that night, but for now, I want to focus on the new commandment that He gave to his disciples.

John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

A Sacrificial Love

This new commandment isn’t just about loving others. It’s about the sacrificial love that Christ has for us. The Bible Knowledge Commentary states this, “Christians’ love and support for one another enable them to survive in a hostile world. As Jesus was the embodiment of God’s love, so now each disciple should embody Christ’s love.”*

Embody Christ’s love.

“As I have loved you, you are also to love one another.”

Love is what makes us, as believers, stand out from the rest of the world.

Nothing can compare to the sacrificial love that Christ has for us. It is a love so great that He endured public humiliation, multiple beatings, and death on the cross for us to know that love.

In the coming weeks, we will be digging into this sacrificial love by studying Jesus’s life leading up to His death and resurrection. It’s time to start preparing our hearts for Easter.
