Armor Up! The Helmet of Salvation and the Sword of the Spirit

Our belt, breastplate, and shoes are firmly secured on our bodies, and we have a firm grasp on the shield. The battle is here; it’s time to put on the last of the armor; the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit.

Armor Up!

Ephesians 6:17, “and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

The Helmet of Salvation

The Roman soldier’s helmet was made of iron or bronze and would protect his head and neck. One fatal blow to either of those would inevitably end in death.

For believers, the helmet of salvation represents our salvation. We are secured in eternal life with Jesus through His blood and sacrifice on the cross. While the feeling of security is there with our helmets on, we must remember that the enemy will do anything he can to knock it off our heads. He will try and tell us lies; that we aren’t loved and we are unworthy to be a child of God.

Oh, sweet friends, salvation is ours! The moment we accepted Christ in our hearts as our Lord and Savior and believed that He died on the cross rose from the grave, salvation was firmly planted in us.

The Sword of the Spirit

The sword is the only attacking weapon that soldiers would have. For believers, the sword is the one thing that we need to be grasping on to and clinching in our hands as if our lives depended on it, and it does! It’s our Bibles.

Hebrews 4:12, states, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

The Lord didn’t give us His Word only to be used for an hour on Sunday mornings. He gave us His Word to be used as an offensive weapon; to be worn down, tear-stained, and marked-up.

That precious Book gives us hope, love, joy, and peace in this sin-filled world. It separates the Light from the darkness.

My Challenge to You

If you struggle with reading and understanding the Bible, I understand completely! I too have only picked up my Bible and used it Sunday to Sunday.

It was only after the Holy Spirit prompted me (or shoved me!) into reading the Word daily, that I got a firm grasp on the Word. There are days when I can only retain one or two verses. But that is one or two verses that I didn’t have the day before.

I take the Word of God in baby steps, and you can too!

I challenge you to read the Bible daily! Whatever your brain can retain, whether it is a few verses, like me, or whole chapters, dig into the Word!

I am cheering you on, friends!
