Get Used to Different – A Review of the Series “The Chosen”

Get Used to Different

Are you tired of binge-watching Netflix or Disney+ during this self-quarantine time?

Here is my review of a new show to watch – one that will change your life and give you a new perspective on the apostles and followers of Jesus.

I have to confess that I am not the type that will binge-watch a television show. Binge-reading a book series, on the other hand, is my cup of tea (or coffee!)

When I heard about a new web series called “The Chosen,” based on the backstories of the disciples of Jesus, I was a little skeptical.

First, because Scripture doesn’t give us much of their backstories, we know that Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen. Matthew was a tax collector. Mary Magdalene had seven demons before being healed by Jesus, and while there is no mention of Peter’s wife, Matthew writes about her mother in his Gospel.

The second reason for being skeptical is that sometimes Christian shows or movies can be a little cheesy – I am sure a few of them have come to mind since you started reading this post. Thankfully, because of the advancement in technology and some great producers and directors, such as The Kendrick Brothers (Fireproof, War Room, and Overcomer) and Dallas Jenkins (The Chosen), many of these movies look like a major Hollywood studio was involved.

Download the App!

This show has its very own app. Download “The Chosen” from your app store and sign in.

Here’s the great thing, this is a “pay it forward” application. If you don’t have the funds to watch this show, someone has already paid for you to view it. However, if you do have the financial means, I encourage you to pay it forward. This show is a ministry that needs to go global! Can you imagine the impact this will have on all those watching it in their native language?

One of the things that I loved about watching this show is that it humanized Jesus. As much as I hate to admit this, there have been times that I viewed Him as an authority figure, rigid and no fun at all. The reality is, Jesus was a human, and He had the same feelings that we all have. In the show, we see Him dancing at a wedding reception, laughing and joking with disciples, crying out in despair, and praying intensely to the Father.

“Get Used to Different”

One of my favorite lines in the show is a simple conversation between Jesus and Simon (not yet called Peter).

“This is different,” Simon said.

“Get used to different,” Jesus replied.

Get used to different.

This was a wake-up call for me. Living a life as a Christian in this world, I shouldn’t be blending in. I should be going against the grain, against the current, and living a life for Christ. My life should be different instead of “going with the flow.”

A great reminder of this comes from Romans 12:2a, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

This verse is near and dear to me because of the transformation that has taken place in my life. Through that transformation, though, I am yearning for more.

In this time of uncertainty in our lives, I have decided to be different. I am placing my faith over my fears. For example, I took the Facebook app off of my phone because of my need for up-to-date information – whether it was from the experts or not. Anxiety was taking over my faith in God’s control over the situation.

Through His Word, I know that God is in control, and I am transforming “from one degree of glory to another” (2 Cor 3:18).

If you need a boost in your spirit and you want to watch something uplifting, I highly recommend this show!

Praying for You!

Please let me know how I can be in prayer for you! In these uncertain times, let’s storm the throne for one another and remember God is in control!

Yes, this series is uplifting for a believer . I need to do more and will . My mission trip (two weeks) to India in 2009 was life changing as well . Inspired when I returned , I gave testimony for Christ ; then …… not so much a few years into it . Why is that ? I’m ashamed of myself . God hasn’t gotten slack with me .

God loves you! We all have lukewarm faith at times, and God is always waiting for us with open arms to come running back to Him!

I’m obsessed with this series so far. I really like your point about going against the grain. I feel that happening and the more it does, the stronger the forces are that tried to pull me back. In Christ we are victorious though.

The Chosen series really does get into your soul and revives the spirit within to know that God become flesh ….Jesus the incarnate God and felt what we feel and was tempted first then walked with his disciples amongst the lowely. Chosen shows us a real loving, compassionate Savior. I love Jesus ,the father and spirit so much more. My relationship has been transformed. My desire for fellowship with our Saviour is refreshed.

Thanks, Missy! I am of the same mindset regarding “Get used to different.”

The humanization of Jesus, the despair he felt when He felt when Nicodemus chose his tradition rather than transformation, and the angst the Nicodemus suffered, and the exuberance of the Samaritan woman at the well. This was the first time I realized that the Samaritans were more open to the message of Jesus than the familiar places where Jesus and the first disciples came from.

While “Get used to different” is my favorite line, my favorite scene is Jesus walking down the hill with His followers, with a stalk of wheat or grass in his mouth. For me, that was incredibly powerful, since grass in the Bible signifies the fragility of human life, and Jesus comes as our savior, connected to us in spirit and in the Eucharist.

The Chosen has changed me I am actually reading scripture. Talking to God and working on my control issues and let God do the controlling. I don’t want to confirm to this world. I want to be different
