The Angels and the Shepherds – Luke 2:10-11
PRAISE THE LORD! It is finally here!!!! As soon as the clock strikes 11:35 am, we will officially be on Christmas break! Our boys have been preparing all week (and earlier!) for their finals, and it’s finally time to relax and enjoy our time off!
I am so proud of our boys for the hard work that they have put in this semester! Great job, boys!
The Angels and the Shepherds
The Nativity story would not be complete without mentioning the angels and shepherds. The announcement of the Savior’s birth was not made to the wealthy upper class of Bethlehem, but to the shepherds. Often considered undesirable and the lower class, misfits of society, the Lord sent an angel to deliver the message that the Savior has been born to a group of shepherds. Shepherds who dropped everything to see the infant for themselves. Those same men were the first messengers to the people that the Savior had been born.
From appearing to Zechariah to Mary and Joseph and finally the shepherds, the angels let those important people know that they would play an important role in the Savior of the world’s birth. Can you imagine how excited those angels must have been? The Lord Himself gave them the job to announce that their Savior was coming, or later, had been born. The angels were eyewitnesses to His plans to save the world.
As I was studying these verses, I discovered something that I have misconstrued all these years. Luke 2:10 begins, “and the angel said to them,” It was a single angel that appeared to the shepherds that night to first tell the message of the Savior being born. Only after the angel reassured the shepherds not to be afraid and told them the most important message of all time did the “multitude of heavenly hosts” begin saying:
“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with
whom he is pleased!”
All of heaven rejoiced at the birth of the Savior!
“For All the People”
This news was not just for the Jews but also for the Gentiles – for you and for me.
As we celebrate with friends and family this Christmas, let us not forget that we are loved so immensely by the Lord, that He wants all of us to have eternal life with Him! Our earthly life might be filled with joy and happiness, pain and suffering, but the Lord loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die for our sins. That is the greatest gift that we could ever receive.

Another thing I find interesting is that, from the time we are children, we are taught that the angels (heavenly host) sang to the shepherds. But almost every version has the word “saying” and not “singing” (Luke 2:13).
